Forgot to write my favorite memory....Actually my only memory of first grade is my teacher sitting in the front of the room reading from the bible. I had her for second grade too (even in the 60's we were looping) and I don't have any memories of second grade either. Maybe she wasn't a very exciting teacher. Now I remember a lot about my 3rd/4th grade teacher, Mrs. Heckman.

We were able to buy milk and cookies every day for a snack. Same as a lot of kids, that was my favorite part of the day. lol

My favorte first grade memory was learning to read with Dick and Jane and Puff and Spot!
ReplyDeleteLesley
My favorite first grade memory would have to be the fact that I was the youngest one in first grade. After 5 days of Kindergarten, the teacher gave me a test (I swear I only had to draw a stick figure, that's all I remember!) and deemed me first grade ready. So at 5 years old, I started first grade and never looked back!

I remember making a little hanging ornament for my mother out of clay with my handprint in it. She still has it and puts it on the tree at Christmas time.

Miss Galvin Learns
Awwwwwwwwwwww!!! That is so sweet! <3
DeleteMy favorite first grade memory is getting homemade birthday cards from everyone in my class. i kept those pink construction paper cards for years.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite first grade memory was at Christmas time. Our teacher hung candy canes on the Christmas tree in our classroom. She didn't take it down over the break and when we came back to school in January, all of the candy canes had melted all over the floor. When you're 6 that's funny. And now I think, did they really NOT make her take that down? And we can only guess what her custodian was thinking:)
ReplyDeleteHow did they melt? WOW!
DeleteCongratulations and what a fun giveaway! My favorite first grade memory is many memories of looking at the teacher, over at her desk, watching her teach not only me but others with patience, validation, and love. The teacher was my grandmother and I treasure seeing her as very few in the family ever saw her-- teacher. It was the first time I realized that a woman can be more than a wife or a mother, or grandmother. She was a great standard for me to live up to as I follow in her footsteps as teacher.
ReplyDeleteOK...that brought a tear to my eye. How sweet and wonderful!
DeleteI remember being selected to attend a class that had the GATE students. I wasn't in GATE, but it was nice to be a guest!
ReplyDeleteNot my favorite memory, but the only one I can remember from first grade. It was the first day of school, and I was wearing a brand new dress (probably made by my mother - awesome seamstress!) and brand new white knee-high boots. Our teacher took us to go play at the nearby park where there was this awesome slide. Unfortunately, the night before it had rained so there was a big mud puddle at the end of the slide. So we had to go down slowly so that we could stand up at the end of the slide and jump off the side. Well, it was my turn, and I was just about to jump off the side when the next boy came down the slide too early and hit my feet. I tumbled to the ground and hit my head on a rock which split my head open with a 1 1/2 inch gash. Blood dripped all over my now dirty dress and onto my boots. I was sent home early, so I missed the rest of the first day fun activities! :(
ReplyDeleteOh, my 46 year old mind remembered another memory from first grade - a good one! We put on a play to The Three Billy Goats Gruff. I can't remember which character I was, but we all loved doing it!
DeleteThanks for the opportunity! (entering under FB name - Danny Taylor Rhonda).
Oh, Rhonda, you are the same age as me! What a terrible first day of first grade you had. I'll bet your TEACHER remembered that for a very long time, too!
DeleteMy favorite memory of 1st grade... having an Easter egg hunt at school. I didn't find very many but I had a blast. I remember placing a really pretty one in my backpack (for safekeeping) and forgetting about it. My mom was thrilled when she found it after several days!
ReplyDeleteOh, GAG! LOL! I can only imagine HOW she found it. Follow your nose...
DeleteMy favorite first grade memory is our class singing on the radio for Christmas! It was a huge deal! A school in my hometown is named after my first grade teacher. She was amazing!
ReplyDeleteHilary
Second Grade is Out of This World!

DeleteLoved my teacher making green eggs and ham for us!
ReplyDeleteWe did this as a grade level for years. I wonder if any of those students remember it. :-D
DeleteI really don't remember 1st grade, but I do remember the best 4th grade teacher. Ms. Otto. I loved her and will never ever forget her. I hope one day my students will say the same about me...
ReplyDeleteI remember I had to have surgery and my teacher Mrs Mosey came to visit me in the hospital, She brought me a little rabbit statue and I still have it to this day. Funny, the things we remember!

I have to tall all of you that I actually ran into my first grade teacher my first year of teaching! She was subbing at my school. I always thought she was so beautiful when I was in first grade and I'll admit that I noticed immediately how well she had aged. The one thing that I hadn't noticed was how vain she was. She would barely even speak to me! Someone filled me in and told me not to take it personally, it was just that I made her feel old! LOL!

My 1st grade was in french in a parochial school in Massachusetts in a section of the city called "Little Canada". I remember going to the principals office and she had me say The Apostle's Creed over the intercom because I was the 1st in first grade to learn it by heart. I also remember singing the ABCs in french. The school then converted to English after. My 1st grade the last to be in French.
ReplyDeleteOne of my memories of finally being in 1st grade and being on the other side of the fence (the kindergartners were in a fenced in area). We could finally run a lap outside in the big field and play. We thought we were so BIG & proud of it:) Little did we realize we were only in First grade! lol
ReplyDeleteMy mom taught first grade when I was in first grade at a different school district. I remember my mom practicing how to read with me and my twin brother.

The Phonics Phenomenon
We could buy a carton of chocolate milk for 3 cents and Popsicles were a dime, I believe, at afternoon recess. They sure were good on hot Oklahoma afternoons in first grade with no air conditioning.

I had an amazing 1st grade teacher, whose name was Miss Moose, no joke and she made every student feel special every day. My favorite activity was when she had us all gather around her on the rug and she read to us - instilled a love of reading and storytelling in me.
ReplyDeleteNot many first grade memories...they moved me to second grade within two weeks! (But I missed the vision check in gr. 2 and did not find out I needed glasses BADLY until gr. 3!)

Wow, this is tough. My first grade teacher was amazing. Two things really stand out for me - 1st, receiving a thank you note from my teacher for not only a gift I must have given but also for being a hard working, well behaved student. 2nd, writing a story that was "published" into a "real" book.
ReplyDeleteBoy, 1st grade was a long time ago! I do remember we had a wedding. It was planned out for several days in advance. We all met on the playground and held the ceremony. We were so silly!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely learning to read! That was back in the 70's...I won the award for reading the most books that year. It was awesome!

First grade wasn't memorable for me which could be a good thing. Some memories from other grades aren't that great.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory of first grade was making a kite and flying it all over the playground. I can remember the kite took so long to make and the excitement of finally being able to fly it. veronica.varela@live.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite first grade memory came as my second year of teaching when I got to watch my Kindergartners that I became so close with grow into amazing writers!
ReplyDeleteI moved to my childhood home in the middle of first grade. I remember entering Mrs Chambliss's class, and seeing a boy named Shannon sitting behind the door at his desk. Looking back on it and knowing him all through grade school, he was probably there for behavior issues. I remember taking SRA comprehension tests from the little back that had the answer keys on the back. I never understood why they put the answers ont eh back.
ReplyDeleteI remember my grade one teacher as being my reason for wanting to be a teacher. I remember the little tables and chairs and the walks to and from school. I also remember pretending to be a teacher at home with my sisters and brothers.
